Introducing Plastic OceanicSimon Vetterli
Plastic Oceanic was founded with a simple premise to clean up and try to find a use for the unrecycleable plastic waste found and collected from the coast around Cornwall.
The company now creates beautiful gifts and jewellery made from the collected unrecycleable ocean plastic.
Founder, Dan Edwards who has been a surfer and deep sea diver for many years had seen first hand the plastic polluting our coastal areas and decided to start cleaning it up. After recycling the appropriate materials, a mountain of unrecyleable plastic waste would be left and it was decided that a use for it must be found in order to avoid it just going back to landfill or for incineration.
Plastic is now collected from all over the coastline in Cornwall and Plastic Oceanic has invested heavily in equipment allowing this plastic waste to be made into jewellery and other products.
Presently the company sends all appropriate materials to be recycled and will also be sending hard plastics like HDPE to other organisations, such as Fathoms Free so that thay can be used for the fabrication of kayaks.
Remaining unrecyclable plastic waste such as films, crisp packets and other unidentifiable plastics are processed through a granulator, resulting in a fine aggregate filler material for use in the final products. This matrerial is then washed, dried and cast into various forms with a plant derived bioepoxy resin binder, locking up the waste into treasured items. Of course any items which are no longer wanted or get broken can be sent back to be reground and recast into a new product!
Initially it was decided to produce small affordable gifts such as jewellery, coasters, fridge magnets, etc. to help fund the beach cleaning efforts. People buying these products should know that they are not only helping to fund the cleaning with their purchases but that these gifts are actually made out of the very plastics collected from the coast.
The company will soon be adding larger products to their portfolio, such as worktops, flooring systems and shower trays to name but a few. These larger products will help consume far greater quantities of plastic waste
5% of the profits currently go to Surfers Against Sewage for all the great work they do on stopping the use of these unnecessary single use plastics.
Long Term Plans
Plastic Oceanic wants to think much, much bigger and are putting the profits back into developing a range of large industrial and construction products such as insulation boards, hopefully, using cryomilling and alternative natural binders and techniques to remove the need for any resin. The company has already initiated discussions with architectural firms and building control representatives.
With creative thinking the company believes they can find a longterm use for these unrecycleable types of mixed plastic wastes which would otherwise go to a landfill or be burnt after cleaning from the sea.
Creating an industry out of ocean plastic cleaning should make a difference. However, support and promotion from like-minded individuals and groups is needed to make it happen – not to mention the need for many eco-concious consumers to buy these products!
